Kumiko craftsmanship is an woodworking technique used in Japanese paper sliding doors and screens, while kyokarakami is a paper craft that came to Kyoto via the Chinese Tang dynasty. These two traditional techniques are incorporated to create these box-shaped LED lanterns. The kumiko style traces the forms of cherry blossoms and help leaves, and the dense texture of the kyokarakami gives the LED light a complex, deep appearance. Director of new business Sadako Tanemura managed the product design and development. Using the decorative design skills she learned in school, the lanterns utilize an alternating pattern design technique. Delicate splashes of color unique to the kyokarakami technique are applied to the white base, which resembles a paper sliding door. This creates a striking look, even when placed in already-illuminated spaces.

Sadako manages a woodworking workshop in Hirano, Osaka alongside her husband Yoshiyuki, who serves as the president. The site is located on a former moat from the Edo period. The area is lined with historic Buddhist temples and traditional houses dating back over a century. It is here that the company refines their traditional woodworking carpentry skills, making lattice doors, round paper windows, and oyakokoshi doors, producing these products in a way that they can be adapted to contemporary lifestyles. Filled with the scent of wood, the workshop is always busy, receiving endless requests from hotels, restaurants, and homebuilders.

When not busy creating wooden pieces, the company is working hard to utilize the traditional carpentry skills of its skilled artisans to develop interior design products that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people. “Traditions reveal remnants of things that were used in the past. With this box-shaped lantern, we want to showcase the tradition and beauty behind woodworking craftsmanship,” says Takemura. Each product is packed with the company's craftsmanship and ideals.

The kumiko craft technique consists of using delicate materials to create patterns. The company uses the technical skill developed through their work, having a skilled artisan hand make each piece to its exact dimensions. Sadako mainly oversees the application of the kyokarakami paper. A traditional printing block dating back to the Edo period is used to flawlessly engrave the high quality materials.

The lanterns come in a hanging and floor type, allowing you to use them in the bedroom, living room, or entryway. The switch and wiring are housed inside the unit, giving it a slick exterior. The LED light provides plenty of illumination with 4 AA batteries. The batteries last for approximately 30 hours, making the lantern a great emergency light for use in a disaster.

The woodworking workshop is supported through the skill and teamwork of carpenters both young and old. “The quality of Hikaribako is entirely thanks to our carpenters,” says Sadako, expressing her gratitude.
