Kinokuni Leather TERRA (Wakayama Prefecture)

Along with the Himeji and Tochi regions, the Kinokuni area in Wakayama works to support Japan’s leather industry. The processing method has a long history dating back to the Keicho and Edo periods, and at the start of the Meiji period it further propagated, with the industry reaching an innovative stage. Following modernization, processing centers moved to urban areas, and in recent years the industry limited to initial product processing. However, manufacturing and processing within the prefecture resumed in the spring of 2014. These leather products, which fulfill a range of strict criteria relating to flexibility, friction, discoloration, etc., has been named “Kinokuni Leather.” Using their proven technology, the company is beginning a new campaign to revitalize Wakayama’s leather industry through this regional brand.

TERRA’s CEO, Yasumori Fujii, is a veteran craftsman with 35 years in the leather processing world. “The quality of the bag doesn’t reveal itself until after 10 years of use. I create products imagining the customer using the bag 10 years later,” says Fujii.” Depending on circumstances, leather products can change 2 months after being manufactured, and the appearance will change drastically by the time it is ready for commercialization. TERRA’s bags are carefully sewn while taking note of the appearance of the leather as it arrives from the tanning factory. This ensures that the optimal material is placed in the correct location (regardless of the angle that the product is viewed), and minimizes product deterioration. In charge of design is Chisako, whose experience even includes work in the bridal and jewelry industry. The company is attracting many fans with the launching of its incredibly modern and sensible designs.
