Wooden Wallets, Gift Envelopes, Stationary, and More Big Will (Tokushima Prefecture)

In Higashimiyoshi town, located in the mountains of Tokushima prefecture, native Japanese trees grow densely. For a period, cedar trees were planted in great volume due to concerns about forest conservation. However, because the cedar tree is a difficult material to process, the thinning work required for the mountain to properly function has not been performed. This concerned Seiichi Nakanishi, head of development at Big Will Co., Ltd. “The current state of the mountain is awful. No one is properly managing the trees that have been planted, and the cedars have been abandoned. Such a dense ecosystem may cause landslides. Shouldn’t humans take responsibility for nature when they are the one’s that are manipulating it?”

Big Will developed a wooden sheet as a method to effectively utilize thinned wood and lumber scraps. At 0.23mm, the sheets are like paper. Not only can they be used as wallpaper, they can also be wrapped at 360 degree angles, something that is quite difficult in the industry. Utilizing the material’s flexibility brings the unique natural wood grain and fragrance of the forest into one’s daily life. “Japanese people in particular feel a special emotion with cedar. We want to show that Japan’s natural resources can resonate in such a way. A matured, industrial society should pay homage to its nature.”
