Not only is the Nishijin ward in Kyoto a production center for Japanese clothing, the area is also a hub for necktie production. In fact – with its highly regarded precision weaving technology – many of the famous necktie brands sold in department stores are actually manufactured in Nishijin.
Zaiki Co., Ltd. was founded in Nishijin’s weaving district in 1931, and has been producing neckties ever since. CEO Shozi Zaiki is in charge of producing some 180,000 neckties a year during peak times. “The neck tie industry is difficult, with specific orders coming in each season. When it comes to the craftsmanship, it’s unfortunate that people don’t notice the necktie’s being produced in Nishijin. Manufacturing takes place behind the scenes, so it’s not very visible,” says Shozi.

In 2009, the company launched its own original brand, ZAIKI. “We can’t properly utilize our craftsmanship without demand from consumers. In order to preserve our tradition, we decided to actively take on market demand.”

Zaiki’s wrinkled ties are woven with an elastic yarn using a traditional futsuori (reversible double weave) technique. They are then put into wrinkle process to give them their unique texture, and fine silk sheen. The ties have also been given a slimmer cut. They have a simple, fresh design that feels more casual. While Nishijin neckties were associated with older men in the past, they also attract the younger customers recently. These designs are created by Mr.Zaiki himself who considers creating new designs while enjoying the latest trends.
