Exploring the abundant possibilities of fabric through nostalgic Japanese tedama

Japanese Tedama Confectionery Accessories FACTORY KURA (Osaka Prefecture)

Made using a delicate sewing technique to create a playful interior decoration that looks just like Japanese confections

Designed and colored to appear just like Japanese confections, with a snug size that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand. The creation of these new fabric tedama accessories was inspired by the desire of two siblings who wanted to provide something fresh and sensational using their mother’s garment factory.

As a child, company head Ayano Ota grew up watching her mother Misako using a sewing machine. Threading her needle to support clothing orders, Misako’s careful work gained the trust of her clients, and her company became a subcontractor for garment accessory manufacturers Her daughter Ayano then took over as company president, and eventually her brother Kento Kato returned to the family business. With subcontracting work growing daunting, the company expanded with an in-house original brand, selling bow ties online, but sales were lacking.

That led them to join the SME support program “Products Created in Osaka,” organized by Osaka Prefecture and Osaka Business Development Agency (Foundation). Upon consulting with leading creators in the field, they considered creating a new type of gift that was linked with clothing accessories. After considering 100 ideas, they decided to make otedama, an object that was filled with family memories. “I loved the otedama that my grandmother made for me when I was little, and I still keep it with me,” says Ayano. “And I wanted to create something with a sense of originality, deciding to reproduce Japanese confections rather than just simply making otedama,” responds brother Kento. Utilizing all their techniques and ingenuity, they came up with incredibly detailed Japanese Tedama Confectionery Accessories

“Unlike my mother, I have not studied dress making, so perhaps that resulted in me not being bound by typical sensibilities,” says Ayano. With that approach, the company appears to be developing a new product to follow the apanese Tedama Confectionery Accessory series.
