Gyokushodo’s Room Incense: Living Series presents a new type of incense stick that incorporates its application as an ancestral offering while also adding fragrant elements that are enjoyable for individual use. “We developed the product for use by families in homes or apartments without a designated worship room who have placed their Buddhist altar in the living room,” says president Shinichiro Nakatsukuri. Conceiving the incense for use in the living room and near the family dining table, the scents were designed to blend well with food. Each scent was created by blending hundreds of different raw ingredients together.

While Gyokushodo specializes in developing products for modern living spaces, the company’s history dates back to 1804. Incense blending and production techniques were first introduced via China. Taking the shop name Togyokusho, the company has continued to produce incense for over 200 years. By 1971 the company formally incorporated and began to modernize its production process. The company developed many innovative technologies, including efficient drying techniques and a spiral incense production method that ensured a long and stable burn. Gyokushodo is known for incorporating these techniques into its in-house operations and contributing to the entire industry as a whole.

The blending process is handled entirely by dedicated research staff. The ideal fragrance is created by delicately balancing a blend of ingredients selected from an enormous stock that includes rare fragrant woods such as sandalwood and aloeswood. While the production process has been mechanized, the incense has manually arranged and horizontally cut prior to drying. Over 200 years of craftsmanship continue to propel the company to this day.

Each stick is approximately nine centimeters, which is roughly half the length as standard incense. The short size reduces the amount of ash spillage, even when using a small incense holder.
The incense will burn within 20 minutes, making it great for use during busy mornings and evenings. The horizontal package design makes it easy to set down on compact Buddhist altars. It’s designed with a slit in the middle to allow for easy retrieval, even when on the last stick.
