The micro-patterned handkerchiefs made by Koto Fiber Association are printed with consideration for the local region. The pattern depicts a species of clam local to Biwako lake, and home-cooked dishes (stewed bean and shrimp from Biwako lake) unique to the Shiga prefecture region. Biwako catfish and regional birds are hidden within the teardrop pattern. This handkerchief is packed with excitement, with new discoveries and conversation-starters that newly appear with every use. The Koto ward of Shiga prefecture is a production center for Omi hemp and Omi cotton crape. Despite the high degree of technical skill, which led to providing materials to famous brands both domestic and abroad, the Shiga Komon name is not very well known. Nonetheless, these technical skills have been passed down over generations, all while maintaining an awareness of current trends.

Shiga Komon handkerchiefs were created from the hemp production line for the fashion industry. These luxurious handkerchiefs are woven from 100% hemp from a region that deals with top brands. The entire process – from weaving, to printing, to embroidery – is carried out with the cooperation and ideas of local craftsman, all of whom know one another. This results in a lot of passionate feedback. Development is carried out collectively with Northeastern Industrial Research Center of Shiga Prefecture. “Without the locals, no one would know the superior industry that we presently have in this region. I hope people will feel the qualities of the hemp with their own hands, and that these handkerchiefs will become a topic of conversation and laughter,” says Mari Kotani of the center. Chasing after this goal, the group is working on designing affectionate patterns to this very day.
