Established by two women born in Shiga prefecture, coconocage is a brand for adult women that adds a modern feminine sensibility to materials and clothing techniques from the lake country of Shiga prefecture. The hemp produced in Shiga’s Koto ward is harvested from ramie, and since the fabric can be produced in a range of climates, the industry is expanding in the area. The Koto ward is also home to superior sewing work, with undergarment makers developing from the Meiji period into the present. In addition, the city of Takashima on the western side of the prefecture is a manufacturing base for highly regarded bamboo fans. Fans and undergarments have developed as the traditional industries of the prefecture. The company is connecting the artisanal crafts of the eastern and western side of Biwako lake, providing modern designs for everyday living.
